Dayton Interest - Take a Ride in the Wright B Flyer

My aunt was recently in town from South Carolina. While she was visiting, my mother had lined herself and my aunt up for rides in the Wright B Flyer over at the Wright Brothers Airport. I was called out of work to go over and take pictures of them for their flight. Let me tell you - it was fun!

Mom, Aunt Linda, and The Pilot with the Wright B Flyer

The people running the flights are a hoot! You can tell they love what they do, that they are interested not only in their topic but love to share what they know as well. They take you up in the flyer for the length of the runway (not more than about 100 ft high). The idea is that they are simulating the original Wright B Flyer flight (and following regulations for their aircraft). When you land they give you a certificate with a toothpick to "pick the bugs out of your teeth".

Mom in the Air

If you have someone along to take pictures (like me), they get to ride around in the staff car:

Yes, that's me in a genuine Model T. How fun!

If you're in the Dayton area, have some time to kill and some money to spend, set up a flight. It was an interesting experience just being an observer.

Random: Freaked Out By the Palm Pre Lady

I was sitting in front of the tv last night knitting a awesomely cute hat for a friend and the (new to me) Palm Pre commercials came on at least three times. Each time I was struck by the following realization:

The Actress (Tamara Hope) in these commercials makes me really uncomfortable!

Why does she make me uncomfortable? I think it's because she actually looks a bit like a fake person, like what a computer thinks we would find pretty, when really she's an anonymous creepy talking head. She just talks in this ultra calming voice and looks... scary. I'm going to quote supreme_queen-1 from the IMDB message boards here and agree: " It's like Cell Phone Girl From Planet Weird. "

And why does she keep saying "bing?" Is she advertising for Microsoft? Maybe she is, but it's just not normal to say "Bing" each time you touch something on your screen, right?

Oh, this one's scarier because she just mostly stares into the camera and says stuff:

The hairstyle is rocking, I'll admit - provided she fixes that hairline a bit. It would be better if they abandoned the cool up-do on poor Ms. Hope and went for a hair down look. Check her out on imdb - she's actually quite pretty.

Quest for My Pretty - Weekly Weight Loss Report

Ok, haven't started WW Online yet, but I plan to any day now!

I've had one hell of a busy week. Sick kitties, broken house, crazy work schedule, crazy projects - I was on the go a bit more than I like to be without much of a chance to take a breather. My stomach is making me pay for it now. I suspect my IBS might have something to do with my non-weight gain. Even my face is breaking out like crazy. It's stress, I'm telling you! Stress!

Weight: 190 (no change) Given the stress and stress eating/drinking I've been doing this week I'm happy there's no change.

What I did right this week: Accepted compliments. I hate compliments they always make me uncomfortable. But I did my best this week to thank people and give credit where it's due - my hair stylist.

What I want to improve on next week: Join WW online and begin to try to work it.

Knitting - Latest Project: Mina's Tuxedo Vest by Wendy Bernard

I asked my husband which version he thought I should make - the button version, or the "in-the-round" version. He chose the button because he thought it would be sexier. Well... maybe on the model in the book, but not on me and not with me being the person knitting it.

Seems I have an issue with creating clothing that is supposed to be custom fit. Particularly with vests. Mine ended up a little larger than I wanted, though I chose a size smaller than I'd need according to my measurements.

The vest is supposed to look like this:

I'm going to give this creation a shot with a few shirts... but I'm not sure I'm ever really going to like it. I'll probably work on a second one in the round - trying to make up for the mistakes I made in this one. I hounded poor Wendy on Ravelry just trying to get this correct. Wendy - I'm so sorry.

Either way, Wendy Berndard's book Custom Knits is Awesome! If you don't knit, or don't knit sweaters it's actually a decent first pattern book. Also check out Wendy's blog - Knit And Tonic.

Polish - Zoya Divinica -The Perfect Berry Red

Now I know it might be a little early for you to start thinking of polishes like this color, but Zoya Divinica is one of my favorite colors. Pardon the lack of cleanup - I still can't find my corrector pen though I really did try with the Q-tips this time.

Divincia was probably among my first order of Zoyas. I also blame Divncia as the reason I keep coming back to this brand. She's just that pretty.

The Color - Divincia is a berry red. She's neutral-cool, but I know several warmtoned people who have gotten away with wearing her. So if you're warm toned but love cool colors, Divincia would be one to try.

The Formula - This is a two coater. Easy application, even with the dinky Zoya brush.

The Wear - I swear, using Sally Hansen Miracle cure, Orly Bonder, two coats of Divincia, and Lippmann's Addicted to Speed I got a three days with minimal tip wear.

The Bottom Line - Many of you will dismiss Divincia as being dull, another red. But I don't think you'll be dissapointed if you give her a shot.

Rescue Beauty Lounge VIP Collection Available for Pre-Order

I'm so excited for this collection I can hardly stand it. I think it's awesome that Ji Baek and three of my favorite polish bloggers worked together to create these colors. I will be pre-ordering mine.

Scrangie - By Scrangie
View Swatches On Scrangie's Blog

Mismas by All Lacquered Up
View swatches at All Lacquered Up

Orbis Non Sufficit by The Polish Addict
View swatches at The Polish Addict

If you're a polish nut like I am I would like to encourage you to visit each blog and read about their experiences working with Ji. It is interesting to hear their perspective on how a polish color comes into existance, their reasons for selecting that color, and how they feel about the result.

By the way, how cool is it that Ji Baek supports the polish bloggers out there enough to have a whole collection inspired by them? I'm sure it's a win-win situation all around, but still very awesome Ji!

2 Days Only - Free Lippmann Polish with Purchase of Shaving Cream

I'm still mad at the Lippmann Collection for the Celebrate collection, but this might be a good deal. Lippmann is offering a free polish of your choice when you purchase Did I Shave My Legs For This?. Now, the cream is $24 so it's very pricey, but if you had any desire to purchase it this might be a good time because most of Lippmann's polish colors are awesome and it would save you the $15 of buying one. On the other hand, you'll have one expensive shaving cream.

Simply enter in "comments" what color you want to receive when you check out.

Color Recommendations:
I suggest Bitches Brew, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, or Brown Eyed Girl. All are wonderful and, I think, difficult not to love. Rhapsody in White may be a little more tricky, but adore it.

When It Rains, it Pours. And my roof leaks.

Well, tomorrow is my fifth wedding anniversary with my husband, Mike. We were going to get dressed up, go out to dinner at Orchid's in Cincinnati. Have some good food, good wine, have some fun. We were planning on purchasing bookshelves to house our giant collection of sci-fi/fantasy as a present to each other. On the side, I was going to get us a trip to Vegas. He gave me an Elsa Peretti "Open Heart" necklace from Tiffany's. Sounds wonderful doesn't it?

Plans never workout how they are supposed to.

Well, the chain for the necklace is too small (minor issue really).

I was just informed that Mike may be in Japan during the time I had wanted to plan our Vegas trip. In fact, he'll be in Japan for two trips for about a month's time each, from what I understand (still don't know exactly when). Unless I get to visit, that won't be fun.

The Kitties got their shots yesterday. Oberon is now grumpy and Cicero has a very upset tummy. Cicero's also allergic to one of the shots, so they have to do all this prep to make sure he's ok. Makes for a very large vet bill to start. Now, what will it cost to get Cicero back to normal... the bookshelves? Yeah, that's about right.

Did I mention it's raining and our roof is leaking? New roof, relatively speaking. It shouldn't be leaking. But it is. Roof should be covered under warrenty (we hope). But what about mold?

When it rains, it pours. Why does it all happen at once?

And yes, the boys ARE worth it. Please send some Happy Healthy Kitty Vibes our way.

The "Obes" (Oberon) - Mr. Grumpy

Kitty Destructo (Cicero) - Mr. Upset Tummy/Allergic Reaction
(this wonderful picture was taken by Kara, btw)

Will we end up going out to dinner? I don't know. I just hope the kitties are ok, particularly the 'Ro. He's always been a little sickly. I'll let Mike worry about the roof. I don't need any more worries. At least until the bill comes - bills are my responsibility.

Quest for My Pretty - Weekly Weight Loss Report

I came to a decision this week. I think I'm going to try Weight Watchers Online. I've heard great things from a a few people and since exercise seems hard to come by due to work load, I should try to control my meals a bit better. Anyone out there had good luck with this program?

Weight: 190 (+1) Probably a bit from last week. I'm not surprised. But I knew it was too good to be true when I lost 2 lbs last week.

What I did right this week: I ate badly this week. I started resorting to fast food. I've had french fries several times, and I haven't been eating those that often. I usually choose other items. I need to ditch the fries.

What I want to improve on next week: Get into the gym. I don't care if I only do it once. I have to learn to get it back into my schedule again.

Banana Republic - 30% off all Work Essentials

If you're like me, you can never find anything to wear when you're faced with a business meeting in New York (for example) because here in Dayton we're a whole heck of a lot more casual. Well, here's your chance to stock up on some business attire. Banana Republic is having a 30% off sale for "Work Essentials".

When I can fit into their styles, I usually am quite fond of Banana Republic. Even their casual clothing looks quite well put together. Plus, if you can handle the fitted/tailored items you can pick up some great looking basics. The downside, of course, is most of their best stuff requires ironing, which is annoying when you are traveling.

Now, if I could fit into their clothing I'd probably be looking at picking up the following items:

Cap Sleeve Fitted Blouse - on sale for $39.99

Jackson Sleek Wide-Leg Pants - On sale for $55

Sleek A-Line Skirt - On Sale for $41

Not flashy at all - just basics. Noticed some of those items are still available in size 16 - maybe I will pick up something after all.

Very Angry at Lippmann's Celebrate Collection.

I was so excited when I saw this on my doorstep (wrapped of course):

I had to try all three colors at once. I'll spare you the picture of Superstar on my toes but here are my reviews:

This is a polish that is almost worth the price of the entire set. I personally don't own any other copper glitters so this one is unique. Best of all, the glitter is so dense it's a one-coater easily. However I was sad that the biggest winner of this collection was a repromote. Why oh why couldn't Deborah Lippmann have given us two more polishes like Superstar but in different colors?

Ruby Red Slippers
Ok, you were right when you read this is the big sister of OPI Midnight in Moscow and China Glaze Lubu Heels. The base is a sheer black polish, but it's packed with red glitter (like Lubu). What's different is that there are larger hexagonal glitter pieces in here too. The result is that you have a polish that definitely DOES NOT look black from far away. It's glittery gorgeousness throw and through.

Please excuse my lack of clean up in the following picture. I can't find my corrector pen at the moment.

Funky Chunky
Funky Chunky is a big fat FAIL. Deborah Lippmann should be ashamed of herself for letting this into this collection. She would have done much better by making another polish like Ruby Red Slippers but with Turqouis glitter instead. Where Ruby Red Slippers works because the base is sheer. Because of that the glitter is allowed to shine through. In Funky Chunky's case the base is so thick there's no way you can see any of the hexigonal glitter. It just comes off looking like bad application and lumpy. See for yourself:

Doesn't that look awful??? And I swear, that's even application. The only plus on this polish is that it is a very thick black that stays put on your fingers. The downside is, as you can see from my forefinger, if you snag a sequin you get a really bad chip. Also, the sequins just don't show very well. I can appreciate that this polish is trying to be innovative, but it just kinda sucks. This is really sad because if it had been just a straight black polish the glossiness and the formula beat the pants off of Chanel Black Satin for me. But it's just lumpy!

Deborah, I need you to impress me. When someone in your lab comes up with a polish like Funky Chunky that's what you call a prototype - you create it, you try it out, you realize you have "issues" you need to fix, you learn from your mistakes and you make something better. YOU DON'T SELL IT TO YOUR PUBLIC!

Man, I'm getting mad all over again. When was the last time a polish actually made me angry? I don't think I'm being too harsh here - who wants a polish to look like that, presumably, on purpose?

The Wear: All three wear like iron by the way, in case you are wondering.

Bottom Line: If you have Superstar, this is probably a collection to pass unless you are a black/red fiend and just have to have Ruby Red Pumps for your collection. Throw away Funky Chunky. You'll be doing yourself a favor.

Nordstroms Anniversary Sale is Here!

Yippee! I love browsing the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (July 17th - August 2). I don't often get anything, but it's fun anyway. Next year, we'll have one in Cincinnati so I can go in person. I can't wait.

A while back, Temptalia gave a rundown of all the Nordstroms Exclusives (cosmetics, of course) that would be available. Let me know what you get and what you like!

Prada's Cutout Studded Platform - Wow!

Holy leather and grommets, Batman!

Yum! Why do these beauties have to be so expensive? I saw a picture of this in my inbox today. BG is letting you "Shop the runway". If this is an example of the types of styles we'll see I am in for a lot of heart-stopping shoe sitings on web. Can I add this to my "I want a knockoff" list?

Fluevog's Having a Sale - I bought the Kellys!

What do you think? Have you ever seen a more ME shoe?

Both my husband and I picked these shoes out. He like them because it reminded him of the binkini with grommets I wore when we were on our honeymoon.

How to purchase from the sale: I had to call the NYC store to get these. Ordering from Fluevog's website doesn't always work very well because it is somewhat ignorant of what they have in stock. Gregory Fluevog wrote me to tell me not order through the web at this time specifically because of the sale. 60% off - you can't beat that! Here is a list of stores and numbers for you.

Sizing on the Kellys: When I ordered these shoes I was told to order my true size (8.5). Unlike my Audreys (which even the staff member at the NYC store said was like "putting your foot in a vice") the Kelly's are supposed to run true to size. I was advised not to go to a 9 because my right foot (which is slightly smaller than my left) would be swimming in a 9.

Sadly, I will have to send them back for some stretching. The way the toe tapers it doesn't accomodate my giant-ass toe! A wonderful sales agent named Sean said that they would work on them for me personally.

Keep your fingers crossed! I want these shoes to become signiture shoes for me this fall. Here are a couple of more pics:

Oberon Kitty couldn't resist getting in the shot

Polish - Chanel Wonderland

When I couldn't find my OPI Chicago Champagne Toast for my recent business trip, I reached for this:

Chanel Wonderland was a limited edition polish that came out around the holidays a few years ago. I believe it was around the same time that Chanel also came out with Black Satin. I think I picked this one up because I couldn't get my hands on that infamous black polish.

I apologize for the photo - it was a little overcast and I could not get the shimmer to show up well.

The Color: Gorgeous nude-champagne-pink with lots of shimmer. It is sheer, though.

The Formula: goes on smooth. Sheer. If you want to make it opaque you need at least three coats. It's gorgeous either way.

The Wear: I'm hard on my polishes. This one wears pretty well.

The Bottom Line: It's not very unique, but I am happy I have this one. It is just little special - as a MUAer once said "No one does subtle shimmer like Chanel."

Quest For My Pretty - Weekly Weight Loss Report

Very bad week, but the scale didn't reflect that. I went to New York City for business, then a friend came to visit from out of town. Both situations mean the food and the wine were present in abundance and being enjoyed. Since last Wednesday, I've eaten out at least 10 times - I'm not kidding. That's usually a very bad thing to do.

First, I just have to say I did get to go to Perilla, my restaurant of choice when I go to New York on business. Yes, I am a fan of Top Chef but I've never seen season one in it's entirety. But I would not have found this lovely little gem of a restaurant if my friend Tara hadn't said "Oh! While you're in New York go to Perilla! It's Harold's restaurant!" two years ago. Delicious, and not a bad value considering it's NYC.

Weight: 189 (-2) I honestly have no idea how this happened but I weighed myself four times to make sure that's what the scale said.

What I did right this week: Honestly not much. But somehow I still lost. Maybe what I did right was take a business trip. I do tend to lose when I go on them, but it throws everything off. I wonder if it's possible to lose weight even though you're eating like a pig just because of stress.

What I want to improve on next week: Considering my habits of the last week, just returning to my normal life style should be a little bit of an improvement. But watch - I will not lose next week. So counter intuitive.

Face of the Day - I haven't worn makeup in a month...

I know this isn't very inspired, but when I go on business trips I tend to not be very experimental. That means I usually do neutrals or pinks. Sometimes both. I'm still suffering from allergy issues so I didn't want to go too crazy with the eye makeup in terms of amount. The result was very light.

The Breakdown

  • MAC Goldenaire Pigment (LE) - all over lid
  • MAC Playful Eye shadow (LE) - Crease
  • MAC Moth Brown (LE) - outer corner
  • MAC Magic Dust (LE) - brow
  • MAC Steelpoint liner
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC15
  • MAC Light Flush Mineralize Skin Finish (LE)
  • Viva Glam VI (LE)

Blahnik by Bowman - Awesome Coffee Table Book!

When on business trips, I inevitably end up waiting for someone in the lobby of the hotel I'm in. Of the a period of two days I spent a great deal of time waiting in the lobby. Fortunately, I had Blahnik by Bowman to keep me company. The awesome hotel that offered this coffee table book for browsing? Hotel Roger Williams on 31st and Madison in NYC.

Since I took my own pictures of this book I hope it's ok to post these...

What's the Book About?
Not much of one. It's a coffee table book. It's supposed to be light. Mostly it's a book to showcase Manolo Blahnik shoes. In between the pictures of shoes (works of art) there's an ongoing discussion between Manolo Blahnik and Eric Bowman. To be honest, I didn't read much of this - I found the type difficult to read and just too chaotic to want to focus (even though there were VERY LARGE letters). I just didn't want to think when drooling over insteresting footwear I can not afford.

What was likable?

I didn't take pictures of the shoes I liked so much as the imagry that struck me as odd. Let me show you what I mean. For example, the photographer had a thing for dead things.

Big dead fish wearing a shoe in a sink. Yeah.

Big dead bird and shoe. While I find the shoe interesting (though it reminds me of a centipede and creeps me out) I found this image very disturbing.

Also disturbing were the images I associated with addiction

Enough Sudafed to start a meth lab? Well, no matter - I actually totally want these shoes. Those are garnets, for crying out loud!

Actually, this picture makes smoking look sexy. I love the way the smoke curls around the see-thru strap.

I did have a favorite, though I'm still not sure I love the shoe:

Anyway, I'm going to pick myself up a copy of this book some day when I can keep my coffee table clear of nail polish. I want this for my own!

Editors Picks from Needless Markup - Loving Ms. Vera once again

I saw a little flyer today in my email box that contained a smattering of editors picks for Neiman Marcus. Very happy to see these two items among them:

Vera Wang - Tissue Organza Dress $1850

I love Vera Wang. Ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer wore a Vera Wang wedding dress in a nightmare Vera Wang has been someone who catches my eye. Now, I already have my crazy expensive Vera Wang - I too wore one at my wedding. Just had to. But if I were looking for a party dress, had oodles of cash, I might very well grab this one up.

Now why do I like this... Well, I'm a sucker for really great looking brown colors. I can't wear them, but they always look comfy to me. There's nothing that says fall like brown and black. Maybe grey and plaid too, but you know what I mean. I also love it when I can tell someone is having fun with fabric, like Vera is here.

Now take a look at the back. I love the sheer back. Notice the overly larger arm holes. Now, if you're like this lovely model here and are super skiny, that's going to look fantastic! If you're me, something will stick out where it's not supposed to. The only thing that bothers me about those arm holes is that I can't tell if it's the volume of the fabric in the front that makes that left side stick out, or poor fit.

Also notice - the ever so slight hint of a bustle. If you compare the back to the front it doesn't look like she puffs out the top of the waist the way she puffs out the back. I'd love to see a side view of this to see for sure. But either way, I don't think it's over done at all and I actually like the effect here.

Love the black belt at the waist too.

Sergio Rossi - Zipper Platform Boot $1290

Ok, I'll admit that if I had 2k to drop on an item of clothing here it would probably be the Vera and not the boot. But I loved seeing this today. This is my kind of boot! Super elegant and at the same time the zipper adds a slight edge. The way it wraps around is very interesting as well. I could see wearing these with many a fall sweater dress and tights. Probably jeans too. If they are comfortable that is. While I like the stiletto heel, it's not very practical. I'd prefer something a bit more chunky. And I'd like the shaft of the boot to be taller.

Leanne Marshall Collection on Bluefly!!!

If you're a Project Runway fan like I am, be happy: Leanne's collection is now available!

Honestly, I'm not that impressed. Most of it reminds me of 80's inspired workout clothing, though I know the fabric is different and it really isn't. I was hoping for more. Like this:

Leanne Marshall on Bluefly "Lana" Skirt for $168

If this were made out of some funky jersy, I'd say it resembled something I had in the 80's - but it would have to be hot pink.

Now here's the funny thing. Bluefly is selling this for $168 but says the retail value is $210. Leanne's collection, as far as I know, is exclusive to Bluefly. So does that actually make any sense? I don't think so!

Quest for My Pretty - Weekly Weight Loss Report

I've been a bad girl. No gym this week. Not much exercise unless you count minimal gardening and wii Sports. What got in the way? Work, the weather, holiday. Lots of good food eaten, though.

Congratulations to my mom, however. She started Weight Watchers Online and lost 10 lbs in a month. Anyone else tried WW Online? Is it worth the price? I think I may have to give it a shot.

Weight: 191 (+1) I deserve it.

What I did right this week: I left food on my plate. Although the food was good, I did a decent job of stopping when I was full. This includes the Cold Stone ice cream trip we took on Sunday.

What I want to improve on next week: MUST GET IN THE GYM!!!!!

MAC Colour Craft Collection Online

Almost let this one slip by me! MAC Colour Craft collection is now online.

Now I've had issues with MAC's baked eye shadows before. I tend not to use the ones I've purchased. However, I'm a Mineralize Skinfinish junkie so I must check out some of those. I also love MAC's mineralize blushes.

Check out these lovely blogs for more info:
