MAC's New Brush Finder Application

As an interface/interaction/usability designer by trade, I have been pretty vocal about my dislike of the "new" (several months old now) MAC Cosmetics site. However they introduced a tool recently that maybe a small step in the right direction: The Brush Finder.

What I like about it:
  • It narrows your search result down by type of brush you looking for, a.k.a eyes
  • It also can narrow down by fiber, use, what type of product you're going to be using it with, etc.
  • These narrowing options appear to work together
  • There's (relatively clear) feedback as to which filter options you have turned on at a time by indicator of a "check" next to the name.
  • You can turn on more than one filter within a given group at once
  • If you click on an item in your result list you can see in specific details about fiber, shape, and use.
What I dislike about it:
  • As an avid MAC user I tend to refer to brushes by number. There doesn't seem to be a quick way to jump in like that. This is a minor annoyance
  • I would love to have a "problem solving" section. For example, Temptalia recently posted a review of the MAC 214 brush. She said if you had trouble doing under eye shading for smokey eyes then this was the brush you were missing. That prompted me to purchase it immediately because that is a BIG problem of mine.
  • This is more of a problem with the site in general, but I find the black background difficult to work with. It hurts my eyes and occasional the font size and color don't show up as well as I'd like, making things difficult to read (whcih is odd, because the contrast is there).
I'm sure there are other things I won't like but that's just off the top of my head. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the Brush Finder tool?
